Planning My Next Cake

My son Russell is going to turn 7 this year, and we are sharing his birthday with his cousin Calvin again. Calvin wants a footbal themed party, and Russell wants Legos, bugs, and a chameleon. OK, we can do this! It might be a challenge to get it all on the same plate, but I think it will be one cool and manly looking cake.

First there's the football. I want a 3D football standing on angled end in a field of grass on one of those little place kicker stands (I'm sure they have a name, but darned if I know what it is...). That way the fondant covered football is prominent and looks very cool. The base of grass can be the main cake (square, 4 inches high, probably chocolate) and it makes the football really stand out. Surrounding the football would be little Lego minifigs, working on the football. Washing it, measuring it, climbing on it, working with ladders, and so on. That's going to be really cute! Perched on top of the football will be a little 3D colorful chameleon. I like the one that Colette Peters has in her book "Cakes to Dream On" but I think a more realistic one would make my boy happier. Put a few bugs in the grass to gross out the girls and we're there.
